Sonal Talgeri-Bhaskaran selected for the Professional Jeweller HOT 100 2010 List as a Hot 100 NexGem
Sonal Talgeri-Bhaskaran, designer, Eastern Mystic Jewellery I don’t design before I make the pieces, I tend to scatter all my stones on the floor and just play around with them, declares self-taught British designer Sonal Talgeri-Bhaskaran the talent behind Eastern Mystic Jewellery. It’s this mentality that led to the design she is wearing for her Hot 100 photograph. It was meant to be a simple one strand necklace, she explains. Each of Sonal’s pieces are designed and handmade using fairtrade 24ct gold vermeil, silver and gemstones, culminating in her unique, Indian-inspired range. Eastern Mystic Jewellery came about following the sudden death of her father when she was still just 23 years old. Sonal had always been looking for a creative channel and found solace in jewellery. I found myself coming home from work and immersing myself in learning how to make jewellery from all the stones I had collected. It was only when friends and colleagues started placing orders with me that I realised that this could be the creative something I’d been dreaming of doing. For a company that is just one year old, Sonal has much to be proud of; from being selected to highlight future trends by the trend experts at IJL to winning the Professional Jeweller Treasure competition for London Jewellery Week. With the all important second year looming, Sonal explains that she is tirelessly working on building her business as a brand. We hope to do a few more exhibitions next year and reach out to more buyers. I’m also working on a new project linked to Eastern Mystic, but it’s in very early stages at the moment, so the coming year will mean a lot of research and training leading up to that.
